Comparing fractions with common denominators
- Example:
- Steven and john talk the same class, Steven finished 11/15 homework, John finished 9/15 homework. Who finished more homework?
- Solution:
- When fractions have a common denominator, compare the numerators.
- Both fractions 11/15 and 9/15 have the same denominator 15,
- the numerator of the first fraction 11/15 is 11,
- The numerator of the second fraction 9/15 is 9,
- since 11 > 9, that is, the numerator of the first fraction > the numerator of the second fraction
- so 11/15 > 9/15, that is, the first fraction > the second fraction.
- Therefore, Steven finished more homework.
